Fifty Dresses finished since last fall!

I have now made fifty dresses, each different from the others, for the mission trip to Malawi.  Here are the last three I completed:

I am having such a wonderful time creating unique dresses for orphan girls and other girls in need, and will continue to do so, as I am convinced that it is a very worthwhile project.  I started doing it after coming across the "Little Dresses for Africa" website, and wanted to create special dresses for them.  I am so happy to have found a local church that will take them to Malawi this June.  Stay tuned.  I hope to post pictures of some of the children wearing the dresses!

Forty-seven done!

I have been taking some time out, teaching some ladies how to smock.  Now I'm back making Little Dresses for Malawi, and have totalled up 47 since last fall.  Here are the latest:

I have completed five more dresses!

After smocking a nightie for my granddaughter, I got back to making dresses for Malawi.  I have made 5 more, and here they are:




I especially love this one!  The trim is aqua microcheck.

Here are the last nine that I am posting.  I have purchased most of the fabric, but have had 4 friends donate some fabric, laces and $$ - it is much appreciated!

I was surfing the web last fall, and came upon "Little Dresses for Africa".  I knew that I wanted to sew for children in developing countries, so I started, not knowing where I would send the dresses.  The dresses are also known as 'pillowcase dresses', but I didn't use a single pillowcase - just 100% cotton fabric.  The pattern is from Nancy Zieman's site.  I walk with a wonderful group of ladies, most of whom attend the same church, and it was this church that has mission trips to Malawi approximately every two years.  This is the group I was lead to donate the dresses for Malawi.  Hope you enjoy all the posts.

I thought I'd mention that I am rather fussy, and if you see a pocket that doesn't look like it is sewn on straight, let me assure you, IT IS!  It's just the way the dress hung that gives the illusion that the pocket is crooked!

I have made 33 dresses since last fall, each one different, and I will continue to post them so others may become inspired to make them for third world countries.  There are so many children who do not have anything, including parents (largely due to the AIDS crisis), and this is my little contribution to clothe a girl with a dress, NEW, and made with love especially for her.  Here goes:
